I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I was first asked to photograph a book of remembrance but when you work with artists, you get to expect the unexpected. This was no exception. Far from being a family keepsake, as I had thought, it turned out to be a beautifully made book with pages of calligraphy, done as part of a World War II remembrance project for the airmen who had lost their lives over the Forest of Bowland. The book was to be presented as part of larger project and the artist wanted a copy firstly to promote on the project’s website but also for archiving purposes. A wonderful story emerged from the book as I photographed it and it was a privilege to work on.
