This was a major project that formed part of the Cultural Olympiad for London 2012 and one I was thrilled to be part of. International artist Lubaina Himid MBE was commissioned to produce paintings to depict the ‘moments that matter‘ from 50 people affected by the London Olympics, after interviewing each of them.
My job was to firstly photograph each of these paintings and then design a series of banners and a poster featuring the images. The banners to be featured in shop fronts throughout the city of Preston, whilst the original paintings are shown in an exhibition at the Harris Museum & Gallery. The posters are to be given away during the We Play Expo during Preston Guild in September 2012. Fine art photographic prints will also be available to purchase.
I had set up space in my studio beforehand, specifically for this project, in order to maximise efficiency, reduce post production time to a minimum and make photographing the paintings as straight-forward as possible. The artist was on hand as a ‘studio assistant’ for the day to facilitate handling the artworks, which really helped and was also fun.
I was thrilled with the response when the artist saw the finished images and commented on how accurate the colours are – always, when working with visual artists, I have concerns about ensuring I represent the colours accurately, so this was a real endorsement.
